2013 Nissan Pathfinder SV

96

The new Nissan Pathfinder trades off-road brawn for on-road comfort. This big change is complemented by a stylish, welcoming cabin and top fuel economy ratings, making the revised Pathfinder a solid choice for a midsize or large crossover SUV.

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder has a lot going for it, namely smooth performance, impressive fuel economy numbers and a welcoming cabin. But even if it’s now better suited to compete in the popular seven-passenger SUV segment, the Pathfinder still faces some tough competition. Our top picks in the segment remain the Chevrolet TraverseFord Flex and Mazda CX-9, each of which is roomier than the Nissan. However, against the strong-selling Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander, the Pathfinder has definitely adapted to become a very appealing alternative.

Trim levels & features

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder is a midsize seven-passenger SUV offered in four trim levels: S, SV, SL and Platinum.

Standard equipment on the S includes 18-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, keyless entry, tri-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a 60/40-split second-row seat (slides, reclines and folds), a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a six-speaker sound system with a six-CD changer.

The SV adds automatic headlights, keyless ignition/entry, an eight-way power driver seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a 7-inch color multi-information display, a rearview camera and an upgraded audio system with a single-CD player, satellite radio and a USB/iPod interface.

Step up to the SL trim level and you get foglights, roof rack rails, a power liftgate, rear parking sensors, heated mirrors, leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, driver memory functions, a four-way power passenger seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a compass.

2007 HUMMER H2

hummer

The 2007 Hummer H2’s “look-at-me!” styling and impressive off-road prowess aren’t enough to offset the vehicle’s glaring faults in performance, fuel consumption and packaging. For practicality in an SUV, look elsewhere.

Trim levels & features

The 2007 Hummer H2 is a large, five- or six-passenger SUV. Standard features are generous and include dual-zone automatic climate control, Bose audio with a CD player and cassette deck, leather seating, full power front seats including lumbar adjustment, a trip computer, OnStar, keyless entry, heated seats front and rear, underbody skid plates, 315/70R17 all-terrain tires and a locking rear differential.

There are two major packages — the Adventure Series and the Lux Series. The Adventure Series adds a self-leveling rear air suspension, a six-disc CD changer, tool and first aid kits, and a front brush guard. The Lux Series package doesn’t include the air suspension, but comes with chrome wheels, upgraded leather seating, a chrome appearance package, single passenger third-row seat (increasing seating capacity to six), a brushed-aluminum roof rack, tubular side steps, satellite radio and the CD changer. A new color-themed package is available as well: Glacier Blue. It comes with special wheels, a DVD player for those in back, a navigation system, a rearview camera, carbon-fiber cabin trim and a roof-mounted light bar. Most of these features, as well as a sunroof, are also available as stand-alone options.

Interior

The H2’s cabin features rugged design elements, such as exposed Allen bolts and a gear selector that looks as if it were lifted from a fighter jet. In spite of its tough personality, the H2 pampers its occupants with dual-zone climate control, well-padded leather seats and a nine-speaker Bose audio system. Sadly, an abundance of hard plastic trim and unconvincing faux metallic accents seem ill-suited for a truck whose MSRP can approach $60,000. With the rear seats lowered, 87 cubic feet of cargo is available, which is noticeably less than other large SUVs.

2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara

nomath

Though more civilized than ever, the 2012 Jeep Wrangler remains a no-nonsense American icon. Its quirky character and unique off-road abilities continue to hold appeal.

Of course, the Wrangler also looks pretty cool and can dive headlong into places where few other vehicles would dare dip their toes. Plus, what other new car allows you to remove not only the roof, but the doors and windshield as well? The answer is none.

Whether you get a basic two-door Wrangler with crank windows and a soft top or a high-dollar four-door Wrangler Unlimited Sahara with heated leather seats and a hardtop, this iconic Jeep is without question a unique vehicle.

Trim levels & features

The 2012 Jeep Wrangler is a convertible SUV available in two-door Wrangler and four-door Wrangler Unlimited versions. Each comes in Sport, Sahara and Rubicon trims.

The Sahara adds the above optional items plus 18-inch alloy wheels, an upgraded suspension, under-hood insulation, side steps, automatic headlamps, body-colored fender flares and a six-speaker Infinity sound system.

2016 Dodge Charger 4dr Sdn R/T RWD

lt

American 4-door sedans don’t get much more rambunctiously pulse-quickening than the 2016 Dodge Charger. With over a half-dozen trim choices, four engines ranging in output from 292 horsepower with an efficient V6 to a truly incredible 707-horsepower supercharged V8, handling and technology to match, road-warrior styling and a lengthy assortment of options, the 2016 Charger offers a bold motoring statement in a wide variety of flavors. It’s not the only domestic sedan with performance and style but, with its arrogant attitude and generous bang-for-the-buck, the alternatives – Chevrolet Impala, Buick LaCrosse, Ford Fusion – just don’t seem to have the in-your-face appeal.

What’s New for 2016

The Charger was all-new for 2015 and changes for 2016 are minimal. There are some trim additions, a Super Track Pak of race-bred chassis upgrades for more performance for the V6-powered SXT and, for a limited time, you can have it in Plum Crazy. Get it while it lasts.

UCONNECT
With maps supplied by Garmin, and Bluetooth connectivity, Uconnect is one of the best infotainment systems on the automotive market. The navigation directions come in clear and concise and it’s easy to operate.

6.2-LITER HELLCAT SUPERCHARGED V8
There is no other sedan engine, at anywhere near this price range, that comes close to competing with the 707-horsepower, 6.2-liter, supercharged Hemi in the Hellcat version of the 2016 Charger. Considering the price, this is one of the all-out go-fast deals of all time.

Vehicle Details

Interior

For 2016 the Dodge Charger’s interior is inviting, comfortable and functional. The instrument panel has all the working stuff angled toward the driver, the gauge cluster is configurable for individual preferences, and there are numerous controls mounted within easy reach on the steering wheel. In the center is an available 8.4-inch touch screen and it and the Uconnect infotainment system are a couple of features we recommend. Front seats are comfortable for long trips, a bench in back will handle three adults and the entire well-designed presentation is also easy on the eyes.

Exterior

While the roofline and general shape retain a familial linkage to previous Chargers, the 2016 is sleek and modern from front to rear. The smoothly rounded nose would seem to make obvious contributions to reduced aerodynamic drag, and the attractive rear includes Dodge’s distinctive layout of the “racetrack” taillight arrangement, which certainly stands out in after-dark traffic. It looks like what it is: an American sedan with performance potential.

Notable Standard Equipment

LED daytime running lights, acoustic front glass and windshield, front and rear power windows with express front up/down, and a configurable, full-color, 7-inch driver-information display are all standard features on the 2016 Dodge Charger. With a wide range of trim levels there is, obviously, an equally wide range of standard-equipment listings.
